Cheering for School Spirit
Shelbie Miller
A few months ago, this year's EMS Cheerleading squad was formed. They have new 7th grade cheerleaders. Also this years new coach is Mrs.Quaites.
"I wanted to show school spirit," said Mrs.Quaites." I was coaching for four years, then stopped for two, and decided that I wanted to coach again.
At the end of last school year, the cheerleaders tried out for the EMS cheer squad for similar reasons.
"I joined cheerleading because I enjoy cheering and dancing, " explained Da"leana Sullivan. " It also gives me something to do during the year." Jazell Gill also stated that she joined to show school spirit.
This summer their was a cheerleading camp hosted by the NFC ( National Federation of Cheer) and a couple of colleges including UCLA and Harvard. They learned about rules and regulations. Jazzel Gill stated that her favorite thing about cheer camp was learning new cheers.
The cheerleaders already had a school dance for a fundraiser. They hired a DJ and bought refreshments. It was held afterschool in the gym from 3 to 5, and the cost was $2.00. Some of the students thought it was exceptionally good for their first dance. The dance helped pay for the cheerleaders' uniforms and gave students a chance to have fun. Mrs.Quaites informed us that they buy their own uniforms to give the girls a sense of pride and responsibility.
Apparently, they will be hosting another dance. It will be held on Febuary 13 after school. According to Mrs.Quaites it is a Valentine themed dance. She also said that it would be an actual dance with dresses and a photographer.
According to the girls, there are ups and downs to cheerleading. Da'leana and Jazell both stated that they enjoy learning new cheers and having fun with their friends. Da'leana also stated that her favorite skill that she learned so far is tabletop jumps. Though they both also stated that they don't always like staying after school almost every day they agreed that it pays off in the end.
